S-38.149 Postgraduate Course in Teletraffic Theory

Fall 1998 course information

Course Topic: In Fall 1998, the course will deal with Queueing Networks. The course will be mainly based on the book Introduction to Queueing Networks by Gelenbe and Pujolle [1].

Status of the course: The present course can be included in postgraduate studies on Telecommunications Technology (major or minor in S38). The credits can also be included in graduate studies on telecommunications technology.

To whom: The course is primarily meant for postgraduate students of telecommunications technology having an interest in understanding the performance analysis and dimensioning of communication networks. The methods studied in the course are also widely applicable for the analysis of computer systems.

Prerequisites: S-38.143 (Queueing Theory) and S-38.141 (Teletraffic Theory) recommended.

Course completion: The course will be arranged as a seminar (meetings once per week). The working language is English.

  1. Each participant will give a presentation on the selected subject,
  2. hand out 2 homework exercises in the subject,
  3. present the solutions to these exercises,
  4. examine the solutions to these exercises by the others, and
  5. do at least 50% homeworks given by the others.
  6. In addition presence in seminar sessions is required (at least 8 times).
  7. Finally, an examination arranged at the end of the seminar must be passed.

The presentations need not be accompanied by a fully written report. It is, however, essential that the presentations are well prepared and supported by high quality overhead material (clear handwriting allowed) that is distributed as handouts to others. The main emphasis should be in clarity and understandability. The handouts should give a self-contained exposition on the subject, especially in areas based on material outside the main textbook [1]. Each presentation should last (about) 1 h 15 min, after which we have 15 minutes for discussion.

Organisation: The first meeting of the course will be held on Monday 14.9.1997 at 16 in room H401 of the Department of Electrical and Telecommunications Engineering. Then, from 28.9. on the seminars followed by the exercise class will be held weekly on Mondays 16-20 in room H401. See for a more detailed schedule here.

Entry: Preferred way to inform about participation is through TOPI which is available for all students having a license to the university computers. Another way is to send an email to samuli.aalto@hut.fi

Study Credits: This course will be worth of 4 credit points. Additionally, 2 extra points, i.e. 6 points in total, can be gained by giving another presentation and taking care of the associated exercises. Evaluation with the usual marks (1-5) will based on:

    Presentation 1/3
    Examination 2/3
