S-38.149 Postgraduate Course in Teletraffic Theory

Detailed instructions (Fall 1999)

Report: Each participant is responsible to write a report (about 15 pages) on the selected topic. The first page shall include

The idea is that the report has two parts: give first an overview of the selected topic (summarizing essential papers), then concentrate on some specific problem (presenting e.g. some paper(s) in more detail). Be as clear as possible even if the original paper(s) were unclear. The purpose is not to copy the original paper, but to clarify and explain it to the others. Try to identify the original ideas (behind e.g. the formulas). Use figures to illustrate them. The references shall be listed at the end of the report as a separate "References"-section.

The report shall be ready one week before the presentation. Distribution of the report is made in electronic form (PS-, PDF- and WORD-files allowed). Send the report as an attachment by e-mail to samuli.aalto@hut.fi at latest on Monday, one week before your presentation. After that, the report will appear in the web page "Reports".

Presentation: Each participant is responsible to give a presentation (about 60 minutes) based on the written report. The idea is the same as before: give first an overview of the selected topic, then concentrate on some specific problem. Use figures to illustrate the original ideas.

Homeworks: Each participant is responsible to hand out two homework exercises in the subject on which he gives the presentation. Distribution of the exercises is made in electronic form (PS-, PDF- and WORD-files allowed). Just like the report, send the exercises as an attachment by e-mail to samuli.aalto@hut.fi at latest on Monday, one week before your presentation. After your presentation, the exercises will appear in the web page "Homeworks".

Solve the problems, and present the solutions on Monday, one week after your presentation (during the exercises class). Examine the solutions given by the others. Use the following trinary classification: Inform the course assistant of the results by e-mail, and deliver the solutions (your own and the others') to him latest on Monday, one week after the presentation of the solutions.

Acting as an opponent: Each participant is responsible to act as an opponent to another participant. The opponent shall write a summary (about two pages) including his own comments. Send the summary by e-mail to samuli.aalto@hut.fi at latest on the presentation day. In addition, the opponent shall give the oral comments just after the presentation.
