Course status: Teletraffic theory is an obligatory course in the A3-module of teletraffic theory. The course replaces S-38.141 from the old curriculum, which is obligatory in the teletraffic theory major or minor. The course can also be included in post-graduate studies on teletraffic theory.

The course is useful to students of system analysis as well, as methods of queueing theory and operations research are applied to the problems arising in the field of modern data networks.

Objective: The goal of the course is to give an introduction to the traffic problems at different time scales in communication networks and to learn how such problems can be tackled and analyzed. Some material in advanced queueing theory is also introduced.

Prerequisites: S-38.3143 Queueing Theory (recommended; former S-38.143).

Lectures: In spring 2008, lectures are in the 4. period on Mondays from 2 pm to 4 pm in room H302 and on Fridays from 9 am until noon in room F201. The first lecture is on Friday the 14th of March and the last one on Friday the 5th of May, 2008.

Exercises: Exercises are essential part of the course and are held on Mondays at noon-2pm in room H302.

Language: In spring 2008 the course will be lectured in English. The material is available both in Finnish and in English.

Exam: The first exam after the course is on 16th of May 2008 in lecture hall S2 at 9am-noon.

Course personnel: The course is lectured by prof. Jorma Virtamo (room SE 311, phone 4783, email jorma.virtamo@tkk.fi). The exercises are held by Dr. Aleksi Penttinen (room SE 308, tel 5304, email aleksi@netlab.tkk.fi).

Completion: In order to pass the course it is required to pass the examination and to solve at least 30% of the exercise problems. Extra points added to the examination result (max. 30 pts) can be acquired as follows: 50% 1 point, 65% 2 points and 80% 3 points. The extra points are not applied to a failed examination.

Entry: Obligatory enrolling is through the OODI system. Possible changes will be announced at the lectures and on this web page.
