Fall 2006 (period II) course information


Note!

Wireless Mesh Networks: Performance and Traffic Aspects

Topic: In Fall 2006, the course will deal with the performance and traffic aspects of Wireless Mesh Networks.

Material: The course will be based on the selected papers from recent high-quality conferences including MobiCom 2004-2006, MobiHoc 2006 and Infocom 2006. Each student reads and reviews two papers. In addition he/she prepares two presentations based on these papers. One of these presentations (selected at random) will be given in a seminar session. The selected papers are listed on page Selected Papers.

Status: The present course can be included in postgraduate studies on Teletraffic Theory.

To whom: The course is primarily meant for postgraduate students of teletraffic theory having an interest in understanding the performance analysis and dimensioning of communication networks.

Prerequisites: S-38.143/S-38.3143 (Queueing Theory) recommended.

Organisation: The course will be arranged as a seminar (meetings once per week) in study period II. The working language is English. However, the start-up meeting is already on

From 6.11. on, the seminar sessions will be held weekly on Mondays 16-19 in the same room E110. Each session consists of two presentations. For a more detailed information, see page Schedule.

Completion: To pass the course, each participant shall

  1. read and review two papers,
  2. prepare two presentations with handouts and give one of these presentations, and
  3. be present at all the seminar sessions.

Review reports: The review report is similar to that used in Infocom. A review report format appears on page Review Format. Send your review reports to samuli.aalto@tkk.fi by Friday (before your presentation on Monday).

Presentations: Each presentation should last 45 min. Handouts are distributed to the other participants. A presentation is followed by a discussion during which the other reviewer of the corresponding paper presents and justifies his review report. Send your handouts (presentation slides) to samuli.aalto@tkk.fi by Friday (before your presentation on Monday). Use either PPT or PDF format.

Credits: This course will be worth of 5 ECTS credits.

Grading: The grading with the usual marks (1-5) will be based on:

    Presentation: 50%
    Handouts:     50%

Entry: Preferred way to inform about participation is through WWW-TOPI, which is available for all students having a license to the university computers. Another way is to send an email to samuli.aalto@tkk.fi. Because of the limited number of sessions, the number of participants will be limited up to 12.
