General:
The course in Fall 2000 is given in English (mainly intended for the participants of the
Master's Programme in Telecommunication).
The course in Spring 2001 will be given in Finnish. All the course material is distributed
electronically (via the web pages).
Status :
This course is obligatory for
- all students of the (old) degree programme
Electrical and Communications Engineering
with option Telecommunications and Computer Science,
- all students of the (new) degree programme
Communications Engineering, and
- all students with major/minor in Teletraffic Theory.
In addition, it is optional for the students enrolled in the
Master's Programme in Telecommunication.
Credits:
This course is worth 2 credits.
Object:
The course will be a first step into the world of traffical issues in telecommunications.
More precisely, the purpose is to familiarize the participants with
- mathematical modelling of various telecommunication systems (both single resources
and the whole networks) and their traffic,
- performance analysis and dimensioning of such systems (including some mathematical
methods needed),
- methods used for traffic management (and their analysis).
It serves as an introductory course for the courses S-38.143 (Queueing Theory),
S-38.147 (Simulation of Telecommunication Networks), and S-38.141 (Teletraffic Theory).
Prerequisites:
The participants are assumed to have a basic course in probability.
Entry:
Obligatory enrolling is through WWW-TOPI.
Lectures (2 hours/week):
Lectures will be held on Mondays between 12-14 in room S3. The first lecture
will be held on
- Monday 11.9. starting at 12.15 in room S3.
Altogether there will be 13 lectures. The material presented in the lectures will be
delivered as a compendium via Otapaino. It will also be available on the web page
Lectures.
Exercises (1 hour/week):
Exercise classes will be held on Wednesday mornings between 9-10 in room S1.
The first exercise class will be held on
- Wednesday 20.9. starting at 9.15 in room S1.
Altogether there will be 11 exercise classes. The material presented in the exercise
classes will be available on the web page Exercises.
Examination:
The (first) examination will be held on
- Friday 15.12. starting at 13.00 (and ending at 16.00) in room S1.
In Spring 2001, there will be two retrial examinations (22.1. and 19.3.) for those
who do not pass the first examination. Examination will be based both on the
lectures and the exercises.
No other material is required. Note that most of the problems in the examination will
be similar to those presented in the exercises. Therefore, it is highly recommended
to try to solve the given exercises by yourself and to participate in the exercise
classes. In the examination, you need your student card, a pencil, a rubber, and
a couple of empty papers. You can also have a simple calculator. The examination
consists of five problems, each of which is worth six points. Some old examinations
are available on page
http://keskus.hut.fi/opetus/tentit/.
Course completion:
To complete the course, one has to
- solve enough homework exercises (see page Exercises
for more detailed information) and
- pass the examination.
