Topic: In Fall 2000, the course will deal with Multiwavelength Optical Networks.

Material: The course will be based on the following book:

T.E. Stern and K. Bala, Multiwavelength Optical Networks - A Layered Approach, Addison-Wesley, 1999, 766 pages (ISBN 0-201-30967-X).

Status: The present course can be included in postgraduate studies on Telecommunications Technology (major or minor in S38). The credits can also be included in graduate studies on telecommunications technology.

To whom: The course is primarily meant for postgraduate students of telecommunications technology having an interest in understanding the performance analysis and dimensioning of communication networks. This time, however, the focus of the course is more technological than before concentrating on the networking aspects of optical networks.

Organisation: The course will be arranged as a seminar (meetings once per week). The working language is English. The first meeting of the course will be held on

Monday 11.9.2000 at 16.15 in room U345 of the HUT Main Building.

Then, from 2.10. on the seminars followed by the exercise class will be held weekly on Mondays 16-20 in the same room U345. For a more detailed information, see the web page Schedule.

Completion: To pass the course:

Each participant shall give a presentation on the selected subject,
hand out 3 homework exercises in the subject,
present the solutions to these exercises,
examine the solutions to these exercises by the others, and
do at least 50% homeworks given by the others.
In addition presence in seminar sessions is required (at least 8 times).
Finally, an examination arranged at the end of the seminar must be passed.

Presentations: The presentations need not be accompanied by a fully written report. It is, however, essential that the presentations are well prepared and supported by high quality overhead material (clear handwriting allowed) that is distributed as handouts to others. The main emphasis should be in clarity and understandability. The handouts should give a self-contained exposition on the subject. Each presentation should last (about) 1 h 15 min, after which we have 15 minutes for discussion.

Examination: The (first) examination will be held on

Tuesday 19.12. starting at 16.00 (and ending at 19.00) in room S4.

In Spring 2001, there will be two retrial examinations for those who do not pass the first examination. The dates for these retrial examinations are 22.1. and 19.3. Examination will be based on the whole textbook by Stern and Bala except Chapter 4. Note that Chapters 3, 5, 6, 7 and 8 are covered by the presentations but Chapters 1, 2 and 9 are left as a self-study material. The structure of the examination is as follows:

two obligatory problems of general nature
two more detailed optional problems
- answers as short essays
- choose one of them
three optional problems of "mathematical" nature
- like exercises and examples in the book
- choose two of them

So, totally you have to answer five problems.

Credits: This course will be worth of 6 credits.

Grading: The grading with the usual marks (1-5) will be based on:

    Presentation + handouts:     25%
    Examination:                 75%
