Fluid Queues and Their Applications in Telecommunications

Topic: In Spring 2002, the course is mathematically oriented and will deal with Fluid Queues. Three different approaches to analyze them will be sketched, namely the classical continuous-time analysis, the embedded time-point approach, and the stochastic discretization technique. As an application in telecommunications, various traffic control mechanisms (e.g. TCP) will be concerned.

General information: The course will be arranged as a short course, which includes lectures (10 h), exercise classes (5 h) with homework assignments, and an examination. Lectures are given by Prof. Jacques Resing from the Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands. The course assistant is Samuli Aalto (samuli.aalto@hut.fi, p. 451 2483). The working language is English. This course is worth 2 credits.

Status: Optional course; can be included in post graduate studies.

Prerequisites: S.38.145 (Introduction to Teletraffic Theory), S-38.143 (Queueing Theory), or corresponding knowledge.

Entry: Obligatory enrolling is through WWW-TOPI.

Lectures (2 hours/week): Lectures will be held on Tuesdays between 16-18 in room D302. The first lecture will be held on

Tuesday 29.1.2002 starting at 16.15 in room D302.

Altogether there will be 5 lectures.

Exercises (1 hour/week): Exercise classes will be held on Tuesdays between 18-19 in room D302. The first exercise class will be held on

Tuesday 5.2.2002 starting at 18.15 in room D302.

Examination: The examination will be held on

Monday 18.3.2002 starting at 13.00 (and ending at 16.00) in room S4.

One retrial examination will be held in May 2002.

Course completion: To complete the course, one has to

pass the examination.

Fluid queues: continuous time analysis (Anick-Mitra-Sondhi paper, Scheinhardt thesis)
Relating fluid queues with ordinary queues (Kella/Whitt paper, Adan/Resing paper on M/M/1 driven fluid queue)
Stochastic discretization in fluid queues (Adan/Resing papers)
Applications of fluid models in communications (e.g. traffic shaping, TCP)
Fluid queues and heavy tails (e.g. Boxma papers)
